MY STORY
I grew up in a stable and nurturing household and was a chatterbox just like any child in their formative months. But before I reached the age of 2, my life took a new direction when I suddenly became nonverbal and emotionally distant. I lived in my own bubble. Out of concern that I might be deaf, my parents put me through several tests to diagnose my situation. When the diagnosis came up that I had autism (albeit a high-functioning variety), I was given a specified education alongside other children with special needs.
Despite these non-verbal challenges, it did awaken a superhuman sense of sight, observation and attention to detail that would lay the foundation for my work in art and design. I also learned that storytelling does not have to be told verbally, but visually as well (as shown in graphic novels and comic books). I began to make my own graphic novels and sequential art, which caught the attention and interests of my fellow classmates and teachers.
Once I acquired the necessary verbal and social skills to transfer, I was brought into public school to continue my scholarly pursuits. With my self-taught skills in cartooning, I earned various awards throughout middle and high school (both in comic art and in editorial cartooning). When I graduated high school, I went to a university to broaden my artistic portfolio, and obtained a BFA degree in Illustration.
Nowadays, my goal is to apply what I have learned on visual storytelling onto various forms of illustration, graphic design and visual branding projects.
